An Albanese Labor Government will kick start high speed rail by establishing the High Speed Rail Authority and updating the business case for this nation-building project.
Running along the East Coast from Melbourne to Brisbane, with stops in Canberra, Sydney and regional centres, high speed rail will change the lives of millions of Australians, allowing them to travel across the country at speeds of up to 350km/h.
Not only will High Speed Rail bring our east coast capitals closer together, but it will be a game changer for regional Australia, opening the Gold Coast, Grafton, Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie, Newcastle, the Central Coast, Southern Highlands, Canberra, Wagga Wagga and Shepparton up to greater investment and allowing workers to commute to the big cities.
As part of this business case, we will consider how best to maximise the use of Australian-made materials and the creation of secure Australian jobs – just as we are with our Rail Manufacturing Plan.
No project captures the imagination of Australians quite like high speed rail, but despite the massive benefits this project could bring the Morrison-Joyce Government has wasted 8 long years doing nothing.
This is a long-term project, but the sooner we get to work the sooner it will be completed.
Labor’s plan will build on the work of the last Labor Government, which completed a feasibility study that found that not only was High Speed Rail viable, but that it would return $2 for every $1 of investment.
After reading that study, an independent panel including former deputy prime minister Tim Fischer and the Business Council of Australia’s Jennifer Westacott recommended the creation of the High Speed Rail Authority to get to work advancing the project.
That is exactly what an Albanese Labor Government will do, creating secure Australian jobs and getting to work delivering the nation-building infrastructure Australia needs now and into the future.
