In a big win for local sport, Member for Ballarat, Catherine King, has today announced a Shorten Labor Government will fund a major upgrade to the Ballarat Sports and Event Centre project.
Ms King announced the $5 million in funding, which will take the Centre from a community stadium into a major regional hub.
Labor’s contribution to the project will build five extra courts and increase stadium capacity to 3,000 spectators, as well as adding meeting rooms and function space, improved car parking and better accessibility.
“The Miners, the Rush and the Sovereigns will all have dedicated offices making the centre a permanent home for some of Ballarat’s greatest sporting teams,” Ms King said.
“Basketball is thriving in Ballarat, and this project is ready to go. But we’re being ignored by the Government, and have been for the last three years.”
“With funding from Labor, the Centre can be a regional sports hub. It will generate long term jobs. It will bring visitors and tourism to our region. And it will give local clubs the facilities they need.”
“That’s why today I’m happy to announce that a Shorten Labor Government will contribute the funding to get the Centre across the line.”
