CATHERINE KING MP
SHADOW MINISTER FOR HEALTH AND MEDICARE
MEMBER FOR BALLARAT
Labor congratulates the National Health and Medical Research Council for reaching 80 years of NHMRC grants, including the new grants to be announced today.
The NHMRC was established in 1937, receiving an initial Budget appropriation of£30,000. Since then, successive governments have supported the funding in acknowledgement of the importance of medical research.
Critically, NHMRC grants are awarded through a peer-review process, independent of the Federal Government, including the 326 projects set to be confirmed today.
Labor is an enthusiastic supporter of medical research – we know the incredible potential which comes from investing in medical research. That’s why these grants have our bipartisan support.
Australia’s research capacity is undisputedly world class – Labor acknowledges our fantastic researchers and we congratulate the NHMRC on reaching this important milestone.
