In a direct contradiction of the Prime Minister, the Secretary of the Health Department this morning refused to endorse Malcolm Turnbull’s solemn pre-election promise that no Australian will pay more to see the doctor as a result of his ongoing Medicare freeze:
POLLEY: The day before the election the Prime Minister guaranteed that Australians would not pay more to see a doctor as a result of the freeze. Can you give the same guarantee?
BOWLES: Ministers and Prime Ministers make statements, I can’t comment on their view… And our job is to implement Government policy.
The Secretary’s failure to repeat Malcolm Turnbull’s promise exposes what a hollow lie it was in the first place.
