An expert review of the Personally Controlled Electronic Health Record (PCEHR) has backed the system as critical national infrastructure.
The PCEHR, invested in and started by Labor, has the strong support of health industry professionals and consumer advocates as highlighted by the review released this week.
‘The review clearly doesn’t show what Peter Dutton wanted it to. The comments and the level of support expressed show that the PCEHR has been successful and needs ongoing commitment from the government’ Catherine King, Shadow Minister for Health said.
The review found overwhelming support for continuing the implementation of an electronic health record for all Australians, and that the PCEHR is an important national asset.
Ms King said that ‘the review also outlines the significance of a PCEHR for better access, speed and accuracy of health information and that this all leads to better patient care, benefits to clinicians, greater efficiency, and better health care delivery overall’.
The government has rightly invested in the continuation of the ehealth program and the PCEHR development for all Australians, building further on the critical health infrastructure that only Labor had the vision and commitment to achieve.
