An Albanese Labor Government will bring the next generation of rapid transit to Melbourne’s Southeast by investing in the business case for electric Trackless Rapid Transport (TRT) linking Caulfield Station to Rowville, with stops at Chadstone Shopping Centre and Monash University’s Clayton Campus.
Labor’s $6m commitment will fund a full business case into this first-of-its-kind in Melbourne project, ensuring the proposal stacks up and work can get underway.
During construction, this project will create 2,244 direct and indirect jobs and when complete would unleash the economic potential of this part of Melbourne, allowing new businesses to open and employ workers from across the city.
This part of Melbourne holds more employment opportunities than any part of the city, bar the CBD. But it is being held back by ever worsening traffic congestion and a lack of east to west public transport.
By 2031, delays on the Monash Freeway and Princes Highway are projected to increase by 87%.
With the first stage of the Suburban Rail Loop due to open in 2035, this project will deliver benefits in the nearer term and link up with that city-shaping project in the longer term.
With Monash Heart Hospital due to open next year it is critical that we get on with fixing the public transport connections to the Southeast.
Working with the Victorian Government, Monash University and Vicinity Centres, an Albanese Labor Government would get to work delivering TRT and opening new opportunities in Melbourne’s Southeast.
Only an Albanese Labor Government can be trusted to work with the Victorian Government and invest in the infrastructure that Melbourne needs now and into the future.
Comments attributable to Catherine King, Shadow Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development
“We know that a lack of accessible transport is a limiting factor for residents and workers in this part of the city.
“This project will get locals to work, to the shops and to university, allowing them to spend more time at home and less on the road.
“Not only will this project make their lives easier, but it will deliver secure Australian jobs, both in construction and for the businesses and industries along the route.
“Just like with Labor’s National Rail Manufacturing Plan, we will ensure the business case closely considers opportunities to make these TRT vehicles in Australia.
“This is the kind of infrastructure an Albanese Labor Government will make a priority, creating Australian jobs and delivering a better life for working families.
Comments attributable to Carina Garland, Labor Candidate for Chisholm
“I am committed to connecting our community to great local jobs and services across Chisholm, that’s why I’m so pleased to see a future Albanese Government is so serious about investing in Trackless Rapid Transport (TRT) for the southeast and unlocking economic opportunities for businesses and workers”.
“As a member of a Labor Government I will be able to get to work in Chisholm to build the vital infrastructure we need and to make sure our community remains a great place to study, work and live.”
“Labor’s support for the TRT will mean we will spend less time in congested traffic on the roads and spend more time with our loved ones and in our wonderful community in Chisholm”.
