Labor welcomes the appointment of a new team to head the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA), with Pip Spence appointed as CEO and Director of Aviation Safety and former Defence Force Chief Mark Binskin appointed as board chair.
CASA is responsible for ensuring that Australia’s aviation sector is well-regulated and, most importantly, safe.
The appointment of Ms Spence – an experienced public servant – as CEO brings to an end a long period of uncertainty at the top of this important organisation.
Labor thanks Mr Graeme Crawford for ably filling the role of Acting CEO and Director of Aviation Security since former CEO Shane Carmody retired in late 2020.
Australia has one of the safest air-transport sectors in the world, in large part down to the dedicated public servants who work at CASA.
Labor wishes the new leadership team all the best as they get to work with the sector to improve the effectiveness of the regulatory environment and ensure Australia’s skies remain the safest in the world.
