FARRELL & KING – MEDIA RELEASE – MORRISON MUST EXPLAIN WHY ‘NOT JOBKEEPER’ IS NOT FOR EVERYONE – FRIDAY, 19 MARCH 2021

Hundreds of thousands of tourism workers and thousands of businesses are owed an explanation from the Morrison Government about why they have been deserted.

Reports today reveal some selected workers within the aviation sector will continue to get a $500 per week support payment for another seven months, while other aviation workers and businesses in the tourism sector with flatlining revenues will have JobKeeper ripped away in just 10 short days.

It is crucial that airlines are ready to bring international visitors to Australia when our borders open.

But unless similar support is provided across the aviation sector and to tourism and travel businesses, the entire tourism ecosystem is at risk and the very things that bring visitors to Australia in the first place might not survive.

Scott Morrison needs to explain to aviation and tourism workers who are anxious about their job security beyond March 28 why this ‘not JobKeeper’ support is only for some.

Just like its chaotic announcement of discount destinations, the Morrison Government’s haves and have nots approach to ongoing wage subsidies shows its so-called ‘recovery’ plan continues to be focused more on headlines than lifelines.

Every aviation and tourism worker that becomes unemployed after March 28 will know and remember that Scott Morrison could have extended support to save their jobs but chose not to.
