The Prime Minister has today declared premature victory in the decades-long project to upgrade the Pacific Highway, claiming “we’ve delivered”.
This announcement will come as a shock to the people of Coffs Harbour who are still waiting for work to get underway on their long-awaited bypass.
Coffs Harbour is the last town along the Pacific Highway without a bypass. At completion, the bypass would remove about 12,000 vehicles per day from the CBD.
At October’s Budget, the Treasurer was forced to announce an extra $490 million of funding towards this this $1.8 billion project just to cover cost blow outs.
No wonder the Prime Minister wants to announce victory and move on.
The job isn’t done until it’s done.
Rather than patting himself on the back, the PM needs to get back to work, build the Coffs Harbour Bypass and finish this essential project properly.
