MORRISON’S NSW INFRASTRUCTURE SPEND IS FIDDLING AROUND THE EDGES

Scott Morrison’s latest infrastructure announcement shows once again that while he’s great at the press release, he’s terrible at the delivery.

Today’s much hyped announcement hides a lack of federal commitment behind state contributions, with the Commonwealth delivering only $451 million.

This latest announcement pales in comparison to the $5.1 billion underspend that the Government has delivered over its first five Budgets, or the cuts to annual spending on important roads like the Barton Highway.

When you consider the countless projects that could be funded across NSW it becomes clear that this $451 million won’t even cover the tip of the iceberg.

Just today the Grattan Institute added its voice to those highlighting the importance of infrastructure investment to get us through this crisis. The Government needs to do more to bring forward shovel ready projects and deliver road upgrades across NSW than what has been announced today.

The Morrison Government needs to come up with a real plan for Australia’s infrastructure to both deliver much-needed jobs through the recovery and to drive efficiency and safety into the future.
