DUNNS CREEK ROAD UPGRADE TO EASE CONGESTION
An Albanese Labor Government would invest $65 million to build Dunns Creek Road, easing traffic congestion for residents of Eden-Monaro.
Queanbeyan is the fastest-growing regional centre in New South Wales. The Googong and Jerrabomberra communities have repeatedly called for Dunns Creek Road to be prioritised.
Existing roads into Canberra through Jerrabomberra and Queanbeyan are becoming more congested during the morning and evening commute. They will face even more pressure in the future as Googong continues to grow.
During more than six years of inaction, the Abbott-Turnbull-Morrison Government has failed to deliver.
Labor would seek a contribution from the NSW Government to secure the road’s completion, providing a new link between Googong and Jerrabomberra to Canberra.
Leader of the Australian Labor Party Anthony Albanese said Eden-Monaro voters should use the July 4 by-election to send a message about local infrastructure.
“Growing regional communities like those in Googong and Jerrabomberra desperately need better infrastructure to ease traffic congestion and boost local jobs,” Mr Albanese said.
“We have a Government that has talked a lot about nation building but cut investment in critical areas, including in regional Australia.
“Only Labor will build the infrastructure communities in Eden-Monaro need, just as we did when we delivered 100 per cent of the funding for the Bega Bypass.”
Shadow Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Catherine King said that what mattered when it came to infrastructure in regional Australia was delivery.
“Labor has invested in regional roads, while this Liberal and National Government has delivered seven years of underinvestment,” Ms King said.
“The Coalition has cut road investment in regional Australia and tried to hide it with promises of investment not due until years into the future.”
Labor candidate for Eden-Monaro Kristy McBain said she wanted to get the Dunns Creek Road project moving.
“People want representatives who are prepared to listen to them about their local needs and then take those messages to the Federal Parliament,’’ Ms McBain said.
“I’ve been listening to the people in and around Queanbeyan and they are making it clear the Dunns Creek Road project will make a real difference to commuting times.
“We need to get to work and make it a reality.’’
