LABOR WILL BOOST CHILD & MATERNAL HEALTH SERVICES IN BRISBANE’S EAST

A Shorten Labor Government will boost health services for families in Brisbane’s east by building a dedicated child and youth health centre and expanding services at Gundu Pa.

Labor’s $29.2 million investment will ensure the Bonner community has affordable access to quality children’s health services close to home, helping kids from conception to adolescence.

The Liberal National Party slashed health services in this area under Campbell Newman, closing the Moreton Bay Nursing Care Unit and cutting the 24 hour primary care service at Wynnum Hospital.

It was the Palaszczuk Labor Government that restored health services to the region when it opened the state-of-the-art Gundu Pa community health centre in 2017.

Gundu Pa already offers a range of services to the local community, including specialist outpatient appointments, oral health services, chronic disease management, BreastScreen and rehabilitation.

Federal Labor’s investment will expand on these services for the region’s 11,000 families.

We will invest $26.2 million to establish a stand-alone Child and Youth Health Centre at Wynnum Manly – near Gundu Pa – so young people and their families can get the health services they need.

This integrated health facility is expected to offer services such as child development, child and youth mental health, paediatric outpatient clinics and indigenous maternal and child health services.

Labor will also spend $3 million to upgrade Gundu Pa so it has ultrasound capabilities.

Currently, women can access a range of obstetric and gynaecology services at Gundu Pa but have to travel back to Redland Hospital for a fully publicly-funded ultrasound.

This investment will ensure that no longer has to happen.

These are the kinds of investments Labor governments make to ensure every Australian can access top-quality and affordable health care, no matter where they live.

The Liberal National Party on the other hand just cut and cut and cut from health.

Just last week, Scott Morrison used his Federal Budget to lock in the public hospitals cuts that he introduced as Treasurer.

Like Campbell Newman before him, Scott Morrison is completely out of touch and just doesn’t seem to understand that Australians care about their health services.

Bill Shorten and Labor will deliver a fair go for Australia by reversing these cuts and making massive new health investments with our $2.8 billion Better Hospitals Fund – including this investment for Wynnum-Manly area.

Only Labor can be trusted to fix our hospitals and strengthen Medicare.
