The Federal Member for Ballarat, Catherine King, has met with volunteers in Learmonth to confirm a grant to upgrade infrastructure at Learmonth Cemetery.
Ms King said she was delighted the Learmonth Cemetery Trust would receive $20,000 towards a $56,100 project to build a new rotunda and an internment wall.
“Small cemetery trusts like the one at Learmonth do an outstanding job maintaining local cemeteries for the benefit of the whole community,” Mr King said.
“I was really delighted to report to trust members that their application for funds to help with the rotunda and internment wall had been successful,” she said.
“The rotunda will provide protection for people visiting the cemetery which will be very welcome on days like this. Its design will enabling visitors to sit and reflect on the passing of loved ones in comfort,” Ms King said.
“The new internment wall is a priority after the current memorial wall has reached capacity,” she said.
“The volunteers at Learmonth Cemetery deserve full credit for their tireless efforts to maintain and improve the cemetery and its surrounds,” Ms King said.
“This grant of $20,000 is an example of where properly targeted funding can assist a proactive community organisation achieve its goals,” she said.
