The Abbott government’s decision to axe the Advisory Panel on the Marketing in Australia of Infant Formula (APMAIF) is short-sighted and shows little care for Australia’s commitment to the World Health Organisation Code.
This is a narrow-minded decision and should come as a warning to what future decisions this government will make regarding international health arrangements.
The APMAIF investigates complaints regarding the marketing of infant formulas in Australia, and provides advice to the Australian Government on the operation of the MAIF Agreement.
"Australian consumers have a right to clear and accurate information. The APMAIF has played a unique role in this space and it’s one that will now be left completely vacant,” Shadow Health Minister Catherine King said.
“The APMAIF has worked on ensuring a consistency and accuracy of information in the marketing of infant formula in Australia. Obviously this is not something the Abbott government believes is important.”
After two months in office it’s clear this government sees the health portfolio as one where cuts can be made with little concern for who they effect or what the implications may be.
Nothing from this government’s actions so far demonstrate they see the interests of health consumers as a priority.
