GROUPS URGED TO APPLY FOR COMMUNITY FOOD GRANTS

Community gardens, farmers markets and food rescue organisations in Ballarat and region stand to benefit from $1.5 million in funding now available through the Federal Government’s Community Food Program.

Federal Member for Ballarat, Catherine King, today encouraged eligible groups to apply for grants which will provide an opportunity for not-for-profit groups to bring local communities together to grow, prepare and share food.

“We have terrific community gardens, farmers markets and other fresh food activities in this fantastic region and I encourage those involved to check out whether they can apply for a grant,” Ms King said.

“These markets and fairs and the gardens that supply them are not only great social outlets for our communities, they improve food knowledge and help people make healthier choices.

Ms King said the Community Food Grant program was one of the initiatives announced as part of the National Food Plan released late last month.

“In simple terms this grant program will provide the funding needed to help non-profit groups put great food initiatives and ideas into practice,” Ms King said.

“By providing this funding opportunity, we are helping to bridge the gap between farmers and the communities that rely on their contribution to our food system.”

Community Food Grants are open to not-for-profit organisations, including farmers’ markets, food rescue organisations, charities and cooperative societies. Grants of up to $10,000 will be available for community gardens, city farms and similar activities, and up to $25,000 for initiatives like farmers’ markets and food rescue.

“The Gillard Government has a plan for Australian agriculture and the community through strengthening foundations, preparing for the future and creating new opportunities for our primary industries,” Ms King said.

“The National Food Plan and Community Food Grants are part of that plan. I encourage all eligible organisations to apply and help boost our community’s connection with food.”
