The Gillard Government is providing $204,353 in revenue from the carbon price to assist Mars in Ballarat invest in clean and renewable technologies.

Federal Member for Ballarat and Minister for Regional Services, Local Communities and Territories, Catherine King, today announced the funding which will help Mars with a $613,059 project to reduce both its power bills and carbon emissions.

“By working in partnership with Mars, the Government is helping to reduce their power bills by up to $97,000 a year. At the same time the company will cut carbon pollution by reducing the energy intensity of their operations by 40%,” Ms King said.

“This will be achieved through a high efficiency motor and variable speed drive upgrade in the chocolate production area, and insulation of steam utilisation pipes and vessels in the syrup area.

“These changes are exactly the sort of practical improvements that the Clean Technology Investment Programs were designed to support. It is good to see these programs, developed through our carbon price mechanism, having a practical impact in regions like Ballarat.

“By helping regional manufacturers invest in energy efficient capital equipment and low emissions technologies, processes and products, Labor is supporting projects that are good for regional businesses, good for the local communities and good for the environment.”

Ms King said the Clean Technology Investment Programs are an important part of the Gillard Labor Government’s plan for a Clean Energy Future.

“The $800 million Clean Technology Investment Program and the $200 million Clean Technology Food and Foundries Investment Program are in place to support manufacturers make the transition to a low pollution economy.”
