Under the Gillard Labor Government towns all across the Ballarat electorate are set to join the digital revolution with internet speeds up to 100 times faster than they are now.
Areas of both Bacchus Marsh and Ballarat Central have been chosen as National Broadband Network (NBN) rollout sites, with work beginning in Bacchus Marsh from November 2011. The Ballarat Central rollout is scheduled to commence from April 2012 and was to deliver fibre-optic NBN broadband to 8900 premises.
On 15 February 2012, it was announced that the rollout of high speed fibre cable in Ballarat Central during the next 12 months would rise from 8900 premises to 17800.
The rollout of the NBN will result in a widening of health and education services, encourage the further development of high-tech small businesses and assist local organisations such as the Shires of Moorabool, Ballarat, Golden Plains and Hepburn deliver more services and communicate more quickly and effectively with local residents.
Local families, businesses and schools will enjoy the benefits of faster, modern technology – sharing the same advantages as the cities. It will make regional economies more competitive, ensures our students have the best quality education and will put an end to download delays at home.
