Federal Member for Ballarat, Catherine King, today acknowledged World Autism Awareness Day and the contribution made by those with autism to our Ballarat community.
“While it is estimated that more than 1 in 100 Australians are on the autism spectrum, and over half of us know someone on the autism spectrum, we must still do more to increase understanding and acceptance of autism within the community”, Ms King said.
“Autistic Australians can be found amongst our friends, our relatives, our classmates and our colleagues. Yet we as a community do not do enough to support them.”
“More must be done in our schools, workplaces and the wider community to support those with autism, and ensure that they can fully contribute to our community and live their lives to the fullest.”
“This is a task that all governments across Australia must take on.”
“I was pleased to see my colleague Senator Carol Brown, the Shadow Minister for Disability, introduce a Bill recently to give autistic Australians the support that they deserve.”
World Autism day is this Sunday, the 2nd of April. This year’s theme is “Towards autonomy and self-determination.
