Malcolm Turnbull’s savage health cuts will force the Australian Women’s Health Network – Australia’s only peak body for women’s health – to cease all paid staff positions in only four months’ time.
The Australia Women’s Health Network (AHWN) is dedicated to the health and wellbeing of women in Australia, and has worked for better outcomes in women’s health issues such as domestic violence prevention and informed choice around sexual health and contraception.
Despite their work, the Government has cut all federal funding to the organisation. Reduction of their capacity will have a direct impact on dozens of women’s health and anti-violence organisations across the country.
During the election, Labor committed to making women’s health a national priority by adopting the Australian Women’s Health Charter, as proposed by the AHWN. As part of this pledge, Labor committed to developing a National Women’s Health Policy, funding the Women’s Health Network to continue their important work, and convening a national conference on women’s health.
In contrast, Malcolm Turnbull has completely defunded this well-regarded health promotion organisation, and has done absolutely nothing to reverse his Government’s savage health cuts which will impact every Australian woman.
