Diabetes is Australia’s fastest growing chronic condition, with over 1.1 million Australians diagnosed with Type 1, Type 2 and Gestational diabetes and their numbers growing by 100,000 a year.
Diabetes is also a major factor in many serious health conditions such as cardiac disease, strokes, blindness, kidney failure and amputations, costing the health system an estimated $1.7 billion every year.
Almost two thirds of Australians are overweight (35%) or obese (28%) with the World Health Organisation listing inadequate physical activity as one of the leading risk factors for global mortality.
Walk to Work Day on Friday November 13 is the perfect opportunity for all Australians to get off the couch, ditch the car and begin building some regular physical activity into their daily routines.
