Reports today the Abbott Government is set to approve private health insurance premium increases of up to 7 per cent come off the back of last year’s highest rise in almost a decade.
This is further evidence of the complete disregard the Abbott Government has for consumers who already pay some of the highest out of pocket costs in health in the world.
Not content on slugging consumers with ever increasing private health insurance premiums, the Abbott Government remains committed to its unfair and damaging GP Tax. These are policies that will only drive people away from the health system leading to far worse health outcomes.
From 2007 to 2013 private health insurance premiums rose on average by 5.35 per cent which was always the subject of scrutiny by Labor ministers. By contrast they rose by 6.2 per cent in the first round of increases presided over by the Minister for Health’s predecessor.
This complete disregard for consumers is a shocking start from a new minister who promised to be more consultative and considered.
