Labor welcomes today’s announcement of the proposed appointment of Martin Bowles PSM as Secretary of the Department of Health.
Mr Bowles comes to the position with extensive experience in the health portfolio. Prior to joining the Australian Public Service in 2006 Mr Bowles held senior executive positions in the health portfolio in the New South Wales public sector.
He is a former Chief Executive Officer for the Wentworth and Mid-Western Area Health Services, and also held key positions with Prince Henry, Prince of Wales Hospitals Sydney, the Northern Rivers Area Health Service and the Richmond Health Service.
Most recently, Mr Bowles has been Secretary of the Department of Immigration and Border Protection and a Deputy Secretary of the Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency and Department of Defence.
At a time when Health remains such a contentious Budget issue, Labor welcomes the appointment of such an experienced public servant to this key position.
